CONNEAUT — A handful of cows decided to stretch their legs Thursday morning, taking in the sights of their west Conneaut neighborhood.
The result was double-takes from motorists who saw cattle contentedly grazing a short distance from busy Route 20.
“I guess they wanted to see if the grass really was greener,” said Police Sgt. Steven Gerics, unofficial trail boss for the roundup that followed.
Happily, the bovines didn’t stray onto the four-lane highway, police said. No accidents were reported, and traffic wasn’t stopped or rerouted, Gerics said.
Five cows escaped their pen at a farm on nearby Dibble Road, Gerics said. They strolled through the woods, arriving at the First Assembly of God Church at West Main (Route 20) and Keefus roads. The church lawn proved a tasty stop.
“They were just grazing on the grass,” Gerics said.
As officers kept a close eye on the contented cows, others tried to track down their owner. The animals solved the problem themselves, eventually returning under their own power to their home on the range, police said.
No citations will be issued, Gerics said.
