County plans to celebrate National Family Literacy Day

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — To celebrate National Family Literacy Day, the Ashtabula County Literacy Coalition will sponsor a book giveaway and reading activities at the Ashtabula Towne Square.

Families with children in preschool to the fourth grade are invited to the Center Stage in Towne Square noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 14. Staff from local libraries will share their favorite stories and even hold miniseminars, designed to teach parents how to read to their children better.

New this year will be a puppet show presented by the Kingsville Public Library, said Becky Wayman, Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) Program coordinator-recruiter

Children attending the book giveaway will receive a free book while supplies last. Families also will be eligible for door prizes, Wayman said.

Library brochures and a schedule of upcoming library activities will be available for distribution.

This year’s program is sponsored by the Ashtabula County Literacy Coalition in cooperation with the Ashtabula County District Library, After-School Discovery Programs, Ashtabula Towne Square, Ashtabula Area City Schools/ Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages Program, Ashtabula County Educational Service Center, Gazette Newspapers, Harbor-Topky Library, Kingsville Public Library, MediaOne, Star Beacon/ Newspapers in Education, Waldenbooks, Wal-Mart and the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School/ ABLE Program.
