Saturday’s garage sale at the Buckeye Local Schools Board of Education’s bus garage in Pierpont Township earned the district more than $3,400, said Superintendent Nancy Williams.
The sale was held to clear out desks, furniture and outdated equipment from Pierpont Elementary, which the board closed at the end of the prior school year, and unused items from other district buildings. The district used a garage-sale format rather than an auction, a tactic that paid off at the end of the day.
“We thought it went very well,” Williams said. “We ended up with between a half-dozen and 10 items left when we were done.”
Bargain hunters came out in large numbers, creating a shortage of parking spaces in the school parking lot and keeping district employees and board members busy tallying bills and taking offers. The district needed to empty the garage and barn on the property before selling it.
Williams said district’s deal with the Pierpont Township trustees should be completed this month. Trustees want the bus garage and a 1.219-acre parcel. Resolutions relating to the purchase should be on the agendas of the board and trustees this month.
The Buckeye board last month passed two resolutions that addressed easement issues with the larger parcel, 3.48 acres, which includes the school building. That real estate goes on the auction block at noon Friday at the board office. Williams said they’ve had a couple of inquiries by phone, but as of Tuesday afternoon, no interested buyer had requested a walk-through of the building. The bidding, by law, will start at the appraised value of $165,000.
