AUSTINBURG TOWNSHIP — Charges are ahead for an Austinburg couple too drunk to care for their young children properly over the weekend, according to Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department deputies.
The woman, 37, was stumbling around their College Street home, unable to answer basic questions about her children and oblivious to one of the kids who was standing next to her, deputies said. The woman begged deputies to contact the Children’s Services Board so her children could get help.
Her husband, 40, was passed out on a bed, according to a report.
In the home were the couple’s 5-year-old girl and 4-year-old boy, deputies said.
Deputies were dispatched to the home in response to an assault complaint made shortly after 8:30 p.m. Sunday. There was no assault, deputies said.
A grandmother was contacted and arrived at the scene to claim the children, deputies said. The grandmother said the parents have serious alcohol issues.
Fifteen domestic-related events involving the couple have been reported within the past five years, deputies said.
