MADISON — The Madison man who allegedly stabbed two men in a Madison Village apartment complex will face an attempted murder charge in the incident, Painesville Municipal Court records show.
Robert Calkins, of Madison, is incarcerated at the Lake County Jail pending his trial, Village Police Chief Dawn Shannon said, after he stabbed two men at 3 a.m. on Oct. 26 and fled the scene.
Geneva police officers arrested Calkins at UH-Geneva Medical Center 40 minutes later, when Calkins tried to find treatment for a laceration, Geneva police dispatch records show.
Shannon said one victim was treated at the scene and released, while a second victim, Richard Sherlock of Geneva, was transferred by medical helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, where he underwent surgery to repair his spleen.
“From what we understand, (Sherlock) is doing well,” Shannon said.
The incident began as a “shoulder bump in a hallway,” Shannon said, and witnesses indicate there was no “bad blood” between the suspect and victims.
“It looks like (Calkins) went into the apartment building and bumped shoulders with the victims in the hallway,” she said. “An argument ensued and then pushing and shoving and then the stabbing. That is all we got from the witnesses.”
Painesville Municipal Court records show Calkins will be at a preliminary hearing on Monday. He has also filed for a public defender, court records show.
