GENEVA TOWNSHIP — A 16-year-old Geneva boy faces numerous charges after a violent tussle with an Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department deputy last weekend, according to reports.

Deputies recommended several charges, including resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, receiving stolen property and obstructing official business, according to reports.

The incident occurred Sunday, after residents on Spencer Drive in Geneva Township reported someone had stolen a stereo from their vehicle just moments earlier. A deputy responding to the call spotted two youths in the area of South Myers Road, one carrying electronic equipment. When the deputy approached, one of the youths tossed the gear into a water-filled ditch, according to reports. The youth then became belligerent and fought with the deputy. After a few moments, the youth was subdued with the help of the deputy’s chemical spray, according to a report.

The deputy suffered cuts and lacerations to his hands during the struggle, according to a report.

Later, the youth, along with his 15-year-old companion from Conneaut, said they had picked up the stereo component at a nearby house. However, the item the 16-year-old had tossed — and later recovered from the ditch — matched the description of the gear taken from the vehicle, deputies said.

The 15-year-old had items in his pockets that may have been taken from other vehicles, deputies said. Charges against him are pending, according to reports. Both boys had been drinking, deputies said.
