CONNEAUT — A simple stone outside City Hall serves as tribute to a recently departed Conneaut police officer.
Thanks to donations from caring businesses and individuals, a marker now exists for Nik, the German shepherd partner of Detective Mike Colby, who succumbed to cancer in June. Nik was nearly 8 years old and had worked as a police dog since April 2003, Colby said.
Soon after a story about Nik’s passing appeared in the newspaper, Colby was approached by Robert Marcy of Marcy Funeral Home in Conneaut.
“He wanted to donate a headstone as a memorial,” Colby said.
A short time later, Eric Nesbitt of Thompson-Smith Funeral Home offered the gift of a customized plaque, complete with an image of Nik transferred onto stone. The plaque will hang in the City Hall foyer, next to photos of current police officers, Colby said. The head stone was placed on the east side of the building.
Also contributing to the memorial was Russ Coltman of City Center Garden Center, who donated plants and a tree to the setting, Colby said. Others who assisted in different ways were the Ducro Funeral Home in Ashtabula; Dr. Diane Veale, Dr. Charles Curie and the staff of Country Doctor Veterinary Clinic in Jefferson; and Simak Trucking.
“I really appreciate it,” Colby said.
