Seasonal, H1N1 flu strains topic of public meeting

JEFFERSON — c

The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. and is free of charge.

Dr. John Venglarick, pediatrician, will discuss seasonal and H1N1 flu virus, their impact on the area and prevention strategies, said Chris Kettunen, director of nursing with the Ashtabula County Health Department.

Also, local health officials will answer specific questions about upcoming clinics meant to head off the H1N1 virus.

The meeting reflects local concerns about the flu, Kettunen said. Plenty of calls have been made to the health department, and flu vaccination clinics launched this week have been extremely popular, she said.

“There’s been quite a turnout (at the clinics),” Kettunen said.

Health experts around the world are bracing for an outbreak of swine flu, which is caused by the H1N1 virus. A vaccine is expected to be ready next month.

H1N1 clinics will be held in local schools and at other county locations in November. Thousands of students will be invited to receive the vaccine.

Also, the county health department has added late-afternoon dates to its seasonal flu clinics, Kettunen said. Clinics will be held between 4 and 6 p.m. Oct. 15 and Oct. 29 at the Assumption Church Rectory in Geneva.

Admission is free to the influenza meeting, but because of limited space, advance registration is required. Call the Ashtabula County Health Department (576-3023, ext. 123) to reserve a seat. A light meal will be served.
