A cold front passing through the area kicked up powerful winds that knocked down trees and power lines Monday.
Trees and branches fell at locations around the county, causing isolated power outages, according to police agencies. Illuminating Co. representatives could not be reached late Monday afternoon.
A gust that hit 56 mph was recorded about 2 p.m. Monday at the Ashtabula lighthouse, said Ron Coursen, a National Weather Service observer in Ashtabula. A NWS forecast said 50 mph gusts were possible.
Meteorologists at the NWS office at Cleveland Hopkins Airport were not immediately available Monday afternoon to provide updated information.
Fire departments in the area were dispatched to investigate wires pulled loose by the winds and toppled limbs. A tree came crashing down on Columbus Avenue in Ashtabula.
Heavy rain over the weekend preceded the strong winds. Some 1.4 inches soaked the Ashtabula area during 48 hours, Coursen said.
The deluge was a dramatic departure from the arid weather that had marked the month so far, he said. Prior to the storm, only 0.06 inches had fallen, Coursen said.
“We’re making up for it now,” he said.
Today promised little relief from the rough weather. More rain is in the forecast, and the wind will continue to blow, the NWS reports. Gusts today could reach 40 mph.
