ASHTABULA —
An Ashtabula couple came home from running errands late Tuesday morning to find the mobile home they were living in engulfed in flames, said Woodman Mobile Home Park Manager Bruce Kopack.
“Everybody got evacuated and that is all I’m concerned about. The rest can be replaced,” Kopack said, after he kept one of the occupants from kicking in the front door of the flaming mobile home.
“My maintenance manager saw the smoke and he came and got me,” Kopack said.
Andreas Canterra was trying to get into the house and Kopack kept him out because of the extreme smoke billowing from the trailer.
“He tried to get in but he would have died,” Kopack said of the intense heat.
Neighbors told the same story — the trailer went up in flames quick.
Kopack said Brenda Anbriz and Andreas Canterra were living in the mobile home while the owner was out of town. He said they were doing a great job of taking care of the property.
The couple embraced outside the mobile home as a friend comforted them.
Firefighters were busy completing mop-up operations — throwing burned chairs from the window and talking to utility workers attempting to shut down power and water to the mobile home.
Woodman Avenue was blocked from traffic for more than an hour as firefighters fought the blaze and completed clean-up.
Ashtabula Fire Chief Ron Pristera said Ashtabula Township also assisted in fighting the fire that destroyed the mobile home. He said it was too early to tell the cause of the fire and it is under investigation.
Firefighters returned to the scene at 3:45 p.m. because the fire rekindled, according to dispatcher reports. They got the blaze under control once again and left the trailer park at about 5 p.m., reports show.
