JEFFERSON —
It’s time to get revved up for the 7th annual Zucchini 500 at 11 a.m. July 28 at the Jefferson Farmers’ Market.
Racers carve their vehicles from zucchini.
“This yearly running of the gourds will take advantage of the smooth surface of the St. Joseph’s Church parking lot,” said Susan Masirovits, a member of the market committee. “Last year’s results bested the old distance record by more than 10 feet and 2012 promises even more excitement.”
Racers may bring an over-sized zucchini with them or buy one at the Farmers’ Market. The Market Committee will supply the wheels, as well as decorations to turn the squash into a thing of beauty, Masirovits said.
Mounted on the wheels, the zucchini will be launched down a ramp in an attempt to set more new distance records.
The longest run and a runner-up in each of six age categories will be awarded Farmers’ Market cash vouchers. The overall longest and shortest runs will also receive special recognition.
Organizers invite the public to watch, join in the fun and keep the tradition alive. The Jefferson Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 32 E. Jefferson St.
