GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — The ‘Wall of Death’ business may be a niche market, but the organizers of the Thunder on the Strip motorcycle event are determined to capture it.
Bikers and bike lovers will roar into the third annual Thunder on the Strip motorcycle rally and fill the village with chrome and exhaust Friday, Saturday and Sunday, organizer Dwayne Bennett said.
“There is a lot of stuff going on this year,” Bennett said, “including another Wall of Death show.”
The death-defying Wall of Death show is presented by “Reckless” Rene Regimbal. Owner of the World Famous Wall of Death, Regimbal is a veteran stuntman who has been riding the wall for more than 23 years.
“There are only three or four Wall of Death riders in the country, so we are lucky to have had two of them here in the village,” Bennett said.
Bennett said Regimbal’s ride includes two motorcycles at a time on the wooden wall.
The weekend begins with a Friday ceremony to mark the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. This ceremony will include a fireworks display Friday night.
“It is just a very appropriate time to look back and honor the people who died that day and the mark it left on our country,” Bennett said.
Bennett, who owns Goblin Custom Cycles, and co-chairman Jake Hummel of Sportsterz Bar and Grill decided to start a post-summer season tradition with the motorcycle weekend, effectively extending the resort town’s tourism season.
“We wanted to extend the summer season on the strip, you know, show everyone that GOTL doesn’t just close up on Labor Day,” Bennett said.
Bennett said the event brought 15,000 to 18,000 people to the village last year and he is looking forward to welcoming 25,000 to 30,000 people this year.
“Thunder just keeps growing. We saw a huge response by local businesses this year because the business owners know a large volume of people are coming in,” he said.
The Contraband Harley Davidson Stunt Team will be at Gobin Custom Cycles on Spencer Drive throughout the weekend.
The weekend will begin at 3 p.m. Friday with the 15-stop Thunder on the Strip Bar Hop, Regimbal’s stunt show at 4 p.m., live music through the day and into the early morning Saturday, and the fireworks show begins at 10 p.m.
Saturday events begin at 1 p.m. with the Canton Cycle Portable Dyno at Goblin Custom Cycle and a bikini bike wash at Goblin, a bikini dunk tank at Yankie’s at noon and the BP Boat Simulator at Indian Creek Campground from noon to 6 p.m. Regimbal will hold Wall of Death shows every two hours from noon until midnight.
Bands will rock at different locations throughout the village all day and the Harley-Davidson Contraband Stunt Team will perform at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. in front of Goblin Customs. The Log Cabin will host a Biggest Beer Belly contest with a cash prize at 10 p.m. and Yankie’s will host a wet T-shirt contest at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Sunday events begin at noon with the bikini dunk tank at Yankie’s the Canton Cycle Portable Dyno at Goblin Custom Cycle at noon, with the bikini bike wash from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Goblin. Regimbal will take to his wall of death every two hours from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the Harley-Davidson Contraband Stunt Team at Goblin will begin at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m.
Live music will be hosted at area bars and eateries all day. The custom and sport bike show will begin at 2 p.m. at Yankie’s. The last band takes the stage at SBG at 5 p.m.
