Local garden clubs invite people to “stop and smell the roses” Saturday at the Ashtabula Elks Club during The Garden Trails Garden Club’s first juried flower show in 21 years.
The Autumn Splendor 2009 Flower Design Show will bring the GTGC, Jefferson Garden Club and North Kingsville together for member competitions.
“We are so excited about the Autumn Splendor show,” garden club publicist Beverly Santee said. “We will present a show of eight design classes, with four categories in each class.”
Accredited flower show judges from Burton, Chagrin and Chesterland will eye the many entries in the show, which will be open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Santee said.
The Ashtabula Elks Club is located at 3115 Lake Road West in Ashtabula.
“Admission to the show is free and a bake sale, flat-screen television raffle and other fundraisers will be available to help support these non-profit garden clubs,” she said.
Santee said the local garden clubs provide their communities with flowers and other plants for beautification.
GTGC was founded in 1951. Current president Ella Pizer presides over meetings, which are held at 7 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month in Kister Plaza. For more information call 964-9586.
The Jefferson Garden Club, founded in 1964, holds meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at the Jefferson Community Center. President Sharon Piper oversees garden club projects such as the exterior beautification of Jefferson Town Hall, the Henderson Public Library, Jefferson Community Center, provides the hanging baskets in downtown Jefferson and builds a yearly scholarship fund. For more information call Iva Herman at (440) 576-3616.
The North Kingsville Garden Club, established in 1988, meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at Marcy’s Party Center in Conneaut. The club takes care of the floral beautification of the Conneaut Dock, the Kingsville Public Library, North Kingsville Sunset Park, the Conneaut Municipal Building parking lot and the Conneaut Right Track.
“Our collective vision is to have a personal attachment to community gardens,” Santee said. “The flowers really make a community brighter.”
