County sells Kingsville land for more than value

JEFFERSON — A wooded parcel on Green Road in Kingsville Township will bring the county 150 percent of its appraised value.

The Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved the high bid of Sawyer Logging, Windsor, for $76,200. The 38.566-acre parcel had a minimum bid of $45,000.

County Administrator Janet Discher said the county ordered a fair-market appraisal of the property prior to advertising for bids. The appraisal came back at $50,000.

The property sale drew only two bids. Ron Capitena of 6177 Green Road bid $52,000.

The owner of Sawyer Logging could not be reached for comment Thursday.

A timber survey was not ordered as part of the process of preparing for the sale, however Commissioner Joseph Moroski said the triangle-shaped parcel was included in a survey of a larger county-owned parcel on Green Road that was sold several years ago.

Commissioner Daniel Claypool said the property sale won’t do much to help the county’s current-year fiscal woes. He said, from his standpoint, the money should go toward the carryover balance for 2010’s budget, which is anticipated to be just as difficult as 2009.

“We’re still short on our carryover,” Claypool said.

The county needs a carryover balance so it can pay bills and wages in January and February.
