ANDOVER —
Despite the heat, nine petite contestants clad in jelly heels and chiffon gowns weren’t breaking a sweat as they lined up for the Pymatuning Lake Festival’s Tiny Miss Pymatuning 2012, Saturday morning.
Even the winner was exceptionally cool, considering the pressure and heat.
“Thank you,” said winner Riley Payne, 7, of Hadley, Pa., striking a pose as proud parents snapped photos of the contestants. Some of those same contestants could later be seen soaking their feet in Pymatuning Lake.
The Tiny Miss contest (grades K-3) was the first of four pageants, which included Little Miss (grades 4-6), Junior Miss (grades 7-9) and Miss (grades 10-12), all held Saturday.
The 2012 Little Miss Winner was Asha Hamilton, 10, of Andover; Junior Miss 2012 is Katy Miller, 13, of Cochranton, Pa.; and Miss Pymatuning 2012 is Michealia Skleres, 17, of Andover.
The pageant was the first big event of the 30th annual Pymatuning Lake Festival, held at the main beach of Pymatuning State Park. The festival runs through today and offers family fun and a soothing lake breeze.
“Elvis,” aka full-time impersonator Jim Felix of Pittsburgh, was readying to begin his Sounds of Elvis act at 1:30. Felix has performed at six previous festivals and said he’s seen the event grow, both in terms vendors and attendance.
“I like performing here, I try to make sure I can do (the festival),” he said from behind heavy gold aviator sunglasses.
Stephanie Luke, who said she just moved to Pierpont from Conneautville, Pa., said this was her first time attending the festival.
“I’m surprised how big and nice this is for such a small area,” she said.
Michael and Kristin General, of Cleveland, traveled to Pymatuning Lake to celebrate the birthday of their daughter, Kierstyn, who turns 8 today.
“When we booked our (camping reservation), we saw that this was going on this weekend, so we came over,” Michael General said.
Kierstyn, who was holding still as she got her face painted, showed off her wristband, good for all inflatable activities at the festival.
A wristband is $5 for the whole day, which is heavy on kid-friendly activities and events.
All-day activities include bull ride, bungee jump, craft show, pontoon boat rides, face painting and kids ceramics.
