Charges pending in attempted fire at mobile home

JEFFERSON —  Criminal charges, which could include attempted arson, are pending against a 22-year-old Geneva Township man who reportedly tried to set his ex-girlfriend’s mobile home on fire early Thursday morning, sheriff deputies said.

Deputies were called to an Austin Road trailer park in Geneva Township by a woman who said her former boyfriend tried to cram a burning cloth into her home next to an air conditioning unit. The woman and the suspect had quarreled earlier in the evening, she told deputies.

The woman, who shares the trailer with her two children and a male friend, was sleeping when she awoke to the smell of smoke around 2 a.m., deputies said. The woman glanced out a window and saw the suspect standing outside the trailer, then noticed flames near the air conditioner. The friend removed the unit and doused the fire, deputies said.

The exterior of the trailer sustained noticeable damage, according to a report.

Deputies located the suspect living in a trailer in the same park. He denied any involvement in the fire, deputies said.
