Braden students rally before taking state tests
ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Loud cheering resonated through the Braden Junior High School auditorium Monday morning as students with face paint and colorful t-shirts competed in a variety of events.
Fourteen teams faced off against one another in an attempt to bring a sense of unity of purpose and get the students fired up for state standardized testing.
“It was a well oiled machine. We are going to take things and adjust it for next year,” eighth-grade teacher Nicole Kray said.
The idea germinated from a state middle school conference held recently in Columbus. “I actually got the idea from a principal in North Royalton,” Kray said.
Braden Junior High School Principal Bill Billington said the Ohio Achievement Assesment tests begin April 21 and the five representatives at the conference thought the Kickoff Survivor Challenge was a good way to have some fun and focus the kids on the tests.
Every home room class became a team and had the opportunity to be creative in coming up with a team name, c
The Rappin Beez decided on yellow t-shirts and came up with a rap song that elevated the importance of the achievement test.
Jodi Cash, an eighth-grade teacher who was at the conference, said sometimes the students get apathetic about the test because they don’t get graded and this was a way to have fund and get them focused on the experience.
