Conneaut roads beneath I-90 now open to traffic

CONNEAUT — Motoring around Conneaut just got a little easier, the Ohio Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Portions of South Ridge and Furnace roads that pass beneath Interstate 90, closed since March because of a freeway repair project, have reopened to traffic, said Brent Kovacs, ODOT District 4 spokesman. Initially, the roads weren’t schedule to reopen until mid-November.

Work on the westbound bridges isn’t finished, but enough has been completed to allow work crews to allow vehicles to pass through, Kovacs said. “There may be some restrictions, but the roads are open,” he said.

The roads had been closed to through traffic since the start of March, when work began on a two-year, $46 million overhaul of I-90 between Conneaut Creek and the Pennsylvania line. At the time, ODOT said the roads would reopen in 60 days.

Last week, Conneaut City Council members expressed impatience with the pace of the project. Ward 1 Councilman Doug Hedrick said residents were upset with the prolonged closures, saying the designated detours were inconvenient, waste gas and are in bad shape.

“It’s the construction job that’s gone on and on and on,” he said at the time.

Hedrick was pleased to learn of ODOT’s announcement.

“I feel good for the people affected by it,” he said Tuesday. “I’m glad and thankful it got done. Maybe (ODOT) did hear us.”

Even though the roads are open, drivers may experience some “restrictions,” Kovacs said. Also, the contractor on the scene indicated each road may need to be closed one day before the work is completed, he said.

The entire project is scheduled to be done by fall 2013, ODOT officials have said. Work to date is proceeding “on schedule,” Kovacs said Tuesday.

Similar road closures could come next year as contractors shift their attention to the freeway’s eastbound lanes.
