ASHTABULA —
One man is dead and another seriously injured following an exchange of gun fire around 6 p.m. Saturday, according to Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell and Ashtabula County Coroner Pamela Lancaster.
“There were two males apparently exchanging gunfire in the 900 block of West 37th Street,” Stell said. He said the incident apparently started in front of a two story home on West 37th Street and escalated as the shooters shot at each other and attempted to leave the immediate area.
Patrolman Jim Hildebrand said he found a male suspect with an apparent gunshot wound nearby. He said witnesses also alerted him to the fact that a suspect had run toward West 38th Street and police followed.
“We were directed to West 38th Street and we found a second gunshot victim,” Hildebrand said. He was found in front of Union Missionary Baptist Church.
Lancaster said she was called to the emergency room of Ashtabula County Medical Center early Saturday evening. She said one of the men was flown to MetroHealth Center in Cleveland after suffering serious injuries and the second was pronounced dead around 6:50 p.m.
Lancaster said the name of the person flown to Cleveland was being withheld pending further investigation and the identity of the dead man is still to be determined.
“He (the man who was killed) was taken to the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy and for further investigation of trace evidence,” Lancaster said.
Lancaster said autopsy results are expected on Monday.
A Lorain man said he was inside a nearby house watching television when the shooting occurred. “All I heard was gunshots and I came outside. This is nothing new, we have these all the time in Lorain,” he said while taking video with his cell phone.
Stell said detectives were investigating the incident and he could not comment on whether there were any suspects besides the two men who were shot.
He said the incident occurred near shift change and manpower wasn’t a problem. “Fairly quickly we were able to get some extra guys,” Stell said.
A variety of emergency vehicles were on West 37th and West 38th streets with officers looking for evidence and distraught people learning of the shootings.
Many people hung out in front of their houses watching the scene unfold.
Another group of law enforcement vehicles responded to Ashtabula County Medical Center where the victims were taken for treatment.
A second helicopter waited in a parking lot across the street from the hospital as a little boy watched from a street corner about a block away.
A group of about 20 people waited outside the hospital as police talked to a member of the medical staff near the emergency room about an hour after the incident occurred.
Numerous units from the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and the Ashtabula County Medical Center. The Ashtabula Fire Department also assisted on West 37th Street and at Ashtabula County Medical Center.
Community Care Ambulances also responded to the scene and the hospital.

The earth will occasionally move under Ashtabula County
When the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811 and 1812 leveled Missouri, the shock waves were strong enough to ring church bells in New York and break windows in Washington D.C. People in southern Ohio fled from their cabins. Closer to the quake’s epicenter, earth liquefied, sand volcanoes popped up and rivers appeared to run backwards. It was the first recorded magnitude 8.0 earthquake in North America, and to this day the strongest. Seismologists agree it could happen again. Some believe it could happen any time within the next 50 years.
