JEFFERSON —
The Ashtabula County Solid Waste District will conduct a household hazardous waste Collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds.
The collection is for county residents only.
Private contractors and commercial businesses should contact the Solid Waste District Office to obtain information about hazardous-waste vendors.
The collection will be held on the midway portion of the fairgrounds, and participants should enter the fairgrounds from Poplar Street. There will be multiple events going on at the fairgrounds that day, so participants are reminded to drive slowly and obey the posted signs. Volunteers and staff will be present to direct traffic to the unloading area.
The district contracts with Environmental Enterprises Inc. of Cincinnati to recycle and/or properly dispose of the material collected at the event. Oil-based paints, gasoline, motor oil, automotive batteries, household chemicals, pesticides, fluorescent lights, household batteries and mercury will be accepted from county residents. Empty containers should not be brought to the collection event but should be disposed of in your regular trash.
Paint must be in 5-gallon containers or smaller. Motor oil will be accepted only in 5-gallon containers or less. No drums of oil will be accepted. If at all possible, all pesticide and chemical materials should be in their original containers.
Tires, propane tanks, ammunition, radioactive items, explosives and large quantities of unknown materials are not accepted.
Latex paint will not be collected this year. Residents should dry latex paint and discard it in the trash rather than take it to the collection event. The best way to dispose of latex paint is to use it up when you paint.
