Three serious crashes kept emergency crews busy Wednesday afternoon and closed area roads for more than an hour.
A two-vehicle crash at the corner of Route 46 and Perry Road in Jefferson Township occurred around 5:30 p.m. Jefferson Emergency Rescue District responded with two rescue units and one fire engine, said Lt. Greg Hamper, of the Rescue District.
“When we arrived, one vehicle was laying on its side, and the other was nose-down in a ditch,” he said.
There were two men involved, and they were each driving a pickup truck, Hamper said.
According to Trooper Dan Jesse of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the two pickup trucks were southbound on Route 46 when the second truck rear-ended the truck in front of him.
“A Chevy Silverado rear-ended the Ford F-150. The Ford then traveled off into the deep ditch and overturned, catching on fire, but the fire was very small,” Jesse said. “The Chevy spun out, struck a culvert and ended up nose-down in a ditch. The driver of the Chevy was then able to exit his truck, on his own, and was missing for a short time.”
The missing driver was found lying in a wooded area close by, Jesse said.
“Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the cause of the crash,” he said. “Neither driver sustained life-threatening injuries.”
Both victims were transported to the Ashtabula County Medical Center.
The Jefferson Police Department was also at the scene to assist.
“Both of those trucks were totaled for sure,” Hamper said.
OHP is investigating the crash. Possible charges against the Chevrolet pickup truck driver are pending, Jesse said.
Two separate crashes occurred on the westbound lane of Interstate 90, near the Route 193 exit, in Kingsville on Wednesday afternoon, which kept traffic stopped for hours.
“This all started with a semi-truck traveling westbound on I-90 in a construction zone, and as he approached the split, he hit the Jersey (concrete) barrier with the left front of his semi, disabling it,” Jesse said. “The impact moved the concrete barrier to the left, blocking the left lane.”
As a result, traffic began to back up, and another semi-truck ,driven by Ivan Trotski, 48, of New Jersey, rear-ended a pickup truck that was almost at a stop. After the impact, the semi continued off the right side of the road and came to rest in the ditch area between I-90 and the westbound on ramp from Route 193, Jesse said.
The pickup truck, driven by Theodore Williams, 55, of Willoughby, spun off the left side of the road and came to rest in the median. Williams had a female passenger with him who was not seriously injured, Jesse said. Williams was injured and transported to ACMC.
Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department and Kings-ville Fire Department responded to the scene.
Both Trotski and the other semi-driver, whose name was not available, were cited for assured clear distance ahead, Jesse said.
“All vehicles had to be towed from the scene,” he said.
