Conneaut teachers will assist Right Track kids

Partnership provides after-school assistance

CONNEAUT — The Right Track program for children and Conneaut schools are teaming to help elementary-age students with their math and reading skills.

The new initiative, begun this past week, enlists public school teachers who provide after-school instruction and homework help four days a week, said Deborah Newcomb, Conneaut Human Resources Center director. Right Track, open to kids in grades 2-5, is housed at the CHRC, 327 Mill St.

Rick Whitney recently stepped down as Right Track director, which prompted the CHRC board a chance to rethink the years-old concept, Newcomb said. “We re-evaluated the program to determine the best use of the money we receive from the United Way,” she said.

The board decided to hire four public school teachers to work two hours a day, four days a week to reinforce the lessons kids learn in the classroom. Three 10-week sessions will be held during the 2012-2013 school year, Newcomb said. The Right Track schedule dovetails with the school calendar, she said.

Organizers are hopeful students will like the idea of seeing their teachers outside of a school building and that Right Track enrollment will grow, Newcomb said. On average, around 150 children participate in Right Track, she said.

The CHRC worked with Kent Houston, Conneaut Area City Schools superintendent, and his administrators, to help garner interest among teachers in the Right Track positions, Newcomb said. “We were very pleased with the number of responses we got (from teachers),” she said.

Teachers are involved only in the academic end of the Right Track operation. Newly-hired director Tammy Ledford will assist the teachers and coordinate other activity, Newcomb said. Adding professional teachers to the Right Track program costs less than the old arrangement, she said.

The teaching component enhances the school-Right Track relationship, Newcomb said. For the past few years, school buses have transported Right Track kids to the CHRC at no cost.

“We’ve always been partners,” Newcomb said.

Right Track registration for the school year is still under way. For information, call the CHRC at 593-5273.
