ASHTABULA — A woman who blessed many people through her volunteer work continued her impact on others after her tragic death in December of 2009.
Bonnie Hanson volunteered for numerous organizations during her lifetime including Spiderweb, police auxiliary, the Citizen Corps and was chairperson for information retrieval last Summer during the Vietnam War Moving Wall visit to Saybrook Township, said Renee Palagyi, executive director of the Ashtabula County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Hanson suffered an aneurysm last December, but designated herself an organ donor so she was placed on life support for several days so she could continue her giving to many other people, Palaygi said.
“The guy who got her heart was on the (donor) list for one day,” said her brother Sherman Wertzler of Conneaut. He said other people received her liver, two lungs and a kidney.
Wertzler said the grieving process was just a bit easier knowing that her decision to donate her organs had helped the lives of many others. He said it was definitely helpful to her husband Ray Hanson during his grieving process.
“It’s been hard for him, but it was a big help,” Wertzler said.
Wertzler, and Ray Hanson, received the Director’s Award during a Saturday morning breakfast at Mount Carmel Community Center in Ashtabula.
