Tragedy instills need to help others

ASHTABULA — The need to help a 5-year-old girl after the tragic lose of her grandfather led to an on-going effort to provide blankets for victims of disasters.

Cassandra Lowery, 19, of Pierpont Township, lost her grandfather, John Lowery, in a 2007 Conneaut house fire and felt the pain of her 5-year-old cousin Tabitha Burdette.

“She’d already lost her grandfather and she wanted something that was her own,” Lowery said of her relative who was left homeless at the time.

Lowery said her 4-H Club made blankets for the family after the fire. Later a suggestion from a Conneaut High School teacher led her to continue her efforts as a senior service project.

After high school she chose to continue her work with the Red Cross by purchasing fleece and making it into blankets with her mother Brenda. Lowery said she has taken somewhere close to 50 blankets to the Red Cross.

“We’re very proud of her (Cassandra),” said Brenda Lowery.

“My daughter is a person that believes in dreams and that one person can change the world,” she said adding that many individuals working together can really change the world.

“The Red Cross was a first responder (to the fire) and it is great to put back in the organization,” Cassandra Lowery said.

She received the Outstanding Youth Award at the Red Cross Community Heroes Breakfast Saturday at Mount Carmel Community Center in Ashtabula.
