SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Members of the Ashtabula Italian Club soon will have more room to play bocce and park their cars on Columbus Avenue.
The Ashtabula Area City School Board unanimously agreed Wednesday night to sell the group nearly a half acre of land at 1326 Columbus Ave., a portion of the property formerly known as the Columbus Junior High School property.
Club member Gary Timonere represented the Italian Club at the school board meeting held at Lakeside High School.
“I think (the Columbus Avenue property) will enhance the club,” said Steve Candela, school board member. “You can make a lot of bocce courts there.”
The school board agreed to sell the club the land for $5,000, although it was appraised at about $9,000, according to Superintendent Joseph Donatone.
“The board can sell the property without an auction if it’s valued at less than $10,000,” Donatone said.
The school board then voted to auction:
n The remainder of property at 1326 Columbus Ave., consisting of 4.8 acres of vacant land and having an appraised value of $75,000;
n Property at 3703 Station Ave., consisting of a school building (Thurgood Marshall Elementary) and 8.35 acres and having an appraised value of $170,000; and
n Property at 5321 Chestnut Ave., the former site of Chestnut Elementary School, consisting of about 2.7 acres of vacant land and having an appraised value of $48,000.
School board members agreed to hold the public auction at noon May 14 in the board’s conference room, 401 W. 44th St.
In other business, the school board passed the 2010-11 AACS district calendar. The first day of school will be Aug. 25 for students.
