ASHTABULA — Veteran Star Beacon photographer Bill West was a runaway winner in the paper’s 2009 Internet Best Photo contest.
West swept the awards, even tying with himself for the third-place honor. Readers were invited to use the paper’s Web site to vote for their favorite Beacon photos of the past year.
Their top choice was West’s dramatic photo of gigantic waves crashing next to the Conneaut Harbor lighthouse. Second place was given to his charming portrait of a young girl adorned in a big bonnet.
Readers were divided on the third-place photo, both snapped by West. They split between a young girl’s reaction to an H1N1 vaccine nose swab and an enthusiastic student at a school carnival.
West has won numerous photojournalism awards during his career, including Associated Press honors. He has worked at the Star Beacon for 14 years.
