CONNEAUT — An Ashtabula man facing felony drug charges waived his preliminary hearing in Conneaut Municipal Court this week, a court spokeswoman said.

John Hanna, 35, 1115 W. 43rd St., was bound over to the Ashtabula County grand jury on charges of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs, the spokeswoman said. The charges are fourth- and fifth-degree felonies, respectively.

Hanna was arrested early Monday night on Woodworth Road, police said. An officer on patrol, shortly after 6 p.m., saw a vehicle parked near the boat ramp. Two people, a man and a woman, were inside, according to reports.

The man, in the driver’s seat, told the patrolman the pair just was talking. The officer learned the man was Hanna, while the woman was from West Springfield, Pa., according to reports. The officer told Hanna his drug-sniffing dog was going to circle the car and asked whether the canine would find anything. After hesitating, Hanna eventually said “a pound of weed” was in a bag in the trunk, police said. Police found a gallon-sized plastic storage bag filled with suspected marijuana in the trunk, according to reports.

Hanna is represented by area attorney David Per Due, a court spokeswoman said.
