Rock Creek student wins global contest

Sheridon Wilber’s art earns her school $1,000

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Rock Creek Elementary School students will be taking more field trips this year, thanks to the artistic talents of one of their own.

Sheridon Wilber, 7, of Trumbull Township, is one of 12 winners of the 2009 Cristal Global Family Art Contest — open only to the children and grandchildren, ages 10 and younger, of Cristal Global employees from around the world. She also was one of only four Americans to win.

Sheridon’s mother, Sherry Wilber, is the human resources generalist at Millennium and Organic Chemicals, a Cristal Global Co., Ashtabula complex.

Sheridon depicted the theme, “Brighter Future,” with a colorful crayon and marker picture of penguins, stingrays and fish swimming and playing in the Antarctic Ocean.

“I collect penguins,” she said, adding she wants to see a future with happy penguins.

A photo of Sheridon, along with her artwork, will appear in the 2010 company calendar, and she wins $1,000 for her school.

“It’s exciting,” said Principal Larry Meloro at Rock Creek Elementary School in Rock Creek. “We’re going to use it to go on field trips.”

Meloro would like to take the students to Playhouse Square, he said.

According to Cristal Global, “the purpose of this contest is to foster the creation of family bonds in our organization by including our extended families in aspects of our work.”

Cristal global is the world's second-largest producer of titanium dioxide and a leading producer of titanium chemicals. It has companies and subsidiaries in U.S., United Kingdom, France, Australia, Latin America and Saudi Arabia.
