MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Garden Club members were devastated to learn that eight large flowers pots placed in the vicinity of the former Kmart parking lot and North Ridge Road/Route 20 were missing June 14.
Members filed a police report and spoke to local media in seeking help in the return of the planters, which have been placed in that area for the past eight years as part of a beautification project sponsored by the garden club.
According to Madison Township Police Chief Len DelCalzo, four of the planters were returned Tuesday and the other four by Wednesday morning.
DelCalzo said it appeared that this was a prank.
“Somebody put a sign in front of the planters saying they were free,” he said,. “And the people that took them really thought they were free.”
He said seeing that the planters were in the vicinity of Kmart, which recently closed, several people thought the sign was legitimate.
After reading about the missing planters in the newspaper, Delcalzo said the people that took the planters returned them to the Madison Township Police Department right away.
“They did the right thing and returned them after they realized they were victims of a prank,” he said.
As for the folks who mistakenly took the planters, DelCalzo said they were pranked and there are no charges to be filed.
