CONNEAUT — Race cars and poodle skirts will be the rage in downtown Conneaut this weekend.
The Northeast Ohio Soap Box Derby returns for its 25th year at the Broad Street hill between Jackson and State streets. Nearly two dozen youngsters will compete for a chance to race in the All-American Derby in Akron.
Practice runs are Friday and racing happens Saturday, organizers said.
Also on Friday is the fourth annual Sock Hop, 6 to 10 p.m. at Main and Broad streets. The popular street event will feature food, games, music and a classic car show. Music will be provided by The Kingpins; Mark Carr, who pay tribute to Elvis Presley; Crazy Rhythms karaoke with Bonnie; and golden oldies from DJ Max.
Hula hoop and bubble gum-blowing contests will be held, along with door prizes and a 50-50 drawing. People may also compete in a1950s and ’60s dress-up contest.
The vehicle show welcomes vintage cars, trucks and motorcycles. Dash plaques will be given to the first 200 entries.
In case of rain, the hop will be held Saturday night.
