Windsor scout earns Eagle honors at 15

ORWELL — A tradition is building at the Grand Valley Local Schools Outdoor Science Center, which is getting help from local Boy Scouts.

Ian Tackett, a 15-year-old sophomore at Grand Valley High School, completed a memorial at the science center as his Eagle Scout project with the help of his fellow scouts in Troop 72.

Tackett was honored for his efforts at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor Sunday at Grand Valley High School.

Another Eagle Scout created a bridge on the property last year and a third is working on an amphitheater, Tackett said.

“I learned you can’t do it alone,” Tackett said of his project that included help from fellow scouts, area businesses and an Amish volunteer.

The memorial includes a wooden archway and stones honoring four Grand Valley Local Schools teachers, Bill Page, Kimberly Haines, Marsha A. Dobbins and Paul Meleky, who have died.

Tackett said he has enjoyed scouting for the last 10 years and hopes to continue to be a leader in his troop.

“I’ve enjoyed camping with all my fellow scouts and learning new things,” he said.

Tackett credits his mother, Cheryl, for achieving his Eagle status at such a young age. “My mom has been pushing me and she has been a big part of my scouting experience,” he said.

Jeff Merritt, the Troop 72 scout master, said Tackett is a good teacher. “He had quite a following of younger scouts,” he said.

Merritt said there has been friendly competition between scouts to see who could achieve Eagle Scout first.

Tackett resides in Windsor Township and began scouting in first grade, said Cheryl Tackett. She said he is a drummer in the high school band and is a participant in the Royal Blues Band.
