Conneaut High School graduates 148 seniors

CONNEAUT — Conneaut High School graduated 148 seniors at the 120th commencement ceremony Saturday night at Garcia Gymnasium.

The event featured a blend of song and speeches from members of the class of 2009. Scheduled to address the crowd were senior class president Devea Parks (”As We Go On”), Autumn Heisler (”Choices”), Rebekah Oakes (”Lessons Learned”), Megan Merlene (”Four Years Prior”) and Britny Ylissari (”Bitter Sweet”).

Music was provided by soloists Ashley Emery and Angie Vazquez, who performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the CHS alma mater, respectively, and the CHS Marching Band, under the direction of Sean Smith.

The class was certified by CHS Principal Sean Smith and presented by Dawn Zappitelli, CHS administrative assistant. Kent Houston, Conneaut Area City Schools superintendent, and Wallace “Sonny” Heinonen, Board of Education president, awarded diplomas.

Ashley Emery was the class valedictorian, while Rebekah Oakes was chosen salutatorian. Other candidates for the honors were Anne Gullo, Tyler Howard, Mari Iarocci, Jessica Kaderly, Rachel Lebzelter, Megan Merlene and Lance Zappitella.

The gym was a stand-in for Municipal Stadium, closed to the public several weeks ago because of structural problems.

    The father who allegedly took a shot at his daughter’s ex-boyfriend Saturday night after a domestic altercation was released from jail Tuesday, Municipal Court officials said.
    Harvey Jones, 49, of Ashtabula, was charged with felonious assault and discharging a firearm within the city limits, court officials said.
