GENEVA — Veterans Service Commissioner Dan Whitmire attended the Ashtabula County commissioners work session Tuesday evening to set the record straight on the appointment of Nicholas J. Church.
Commissioners last week approved Church’s $500-per-month compensation as a commissioner who represents the Vietnam Veterans of America. Church was appointed to the board by judgment entry in the Court of Common Pleas on Jan. 14, 2009.
Five veterans commissioners, each one representing a different veterans group, are seated on each county board by judges. Whitmire said Church served on the commission last year, as a representative of the American Legion. However, Church resigned.
“His wife had passed away, and he resigned. He felt he could not do due diligence for the commission’s work for veterans,” Whitmire said.
However, when the position held by Don Branford opened up, Church interviewed for, and was appointed, to the vacancy.
Whitmire says his new appointment qualified Church to receive the new compensation amount of $500 a month, approved late last year.
“That recommendation came out of the fall conference in Dublin (Ohio),” Whitmire said.
Existing members earn $400 a month, except the president, who receives $450. They are locked into that pay rate until the end of their terms. The new rate becomes effective only when a new member comes onto the board or an existing member is reappointed to a second five-year term.
Although Church returned to the board, his was not a reappointment.
Whitmire said Church is a hardworking commissioner, Army veteran and asset to the board, which has made great strides in providing services to county veterans while holding the line on costs. He said he just wanted to set the record straight with the public and commissioners.
