Fire causes $25,000 damage at Monroe Township home

MONROE TOWNSHIP — A smoldering bird’s nest caused a Middle Road home to catch fire Saturday night, bringing three volunteer fire departments to the rural area, said Fire Chief Justin Tuttle.

Tuttle said the bird’s nest caught fire in the chimney and dropped into the house which caused the attic and wires to catch fire at the Henry Brewer residence at 2631 Middle Road.

“It just fell right down into the rafters and kept going,” he said of the fire that caused about $25,000 in damage.

Tuttle said the fire was called in around 10:12 p.m., after the Brewer family realized something was amiss when the lights flickered. He said fire company personnel were back at the station by midnight.

Ten firefighters from Monroe Township responded and Sheffield and Pierpont responded mutual aid, Tuttle said. He said there were no injuries suffered in the fire.

Tuttle said the husband and wife planned to stay at a motel for the evening.
