KSUA grounds aviation maintenance program

ASHTABULA — Kent State University-Ashtabula announces it has decided to withdraw plans to establish the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology.

“When we began the approval process for this degree, research supported its sustainability. However, the current economy requires a redirecting of funding toward our highest priorities,” said Dr. Susan Stocker, KSUA dean.

Stocker said: “Enrolling a student into a program is a multiyear commitment. Establishing a new degree program without certainty of funding would not be in the best interest of our students.”

The program was to have been housed at the Ashtabula County Airport in Jefferson. David Price, Airport Authority president, said: “The Ashtabula County Airport Authority has been working with the campus for a number of years to establish the Aviation Maintenance Program. However, the current economic environment has clearly created a situation where our respective businesses cannot make the required investments or assume the risks of a start-up.”

In keeping with the Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut’s vision for higher education, KSUA will continue plans to expand baccalaureate degree offerings. Regional campuses offer affordable, accessible options to degree attainment, leading to a better-skilled workforce. KSUA is preparing for future growth, with its highest enrollment on record this semester – 1,961 students – an increase of 15 percent since the fall semester.
