JEFFERSON — Sixty-two boxes filled with the ingredients for Thanksgiving dinner were lined up and ready to be given out to needy families Wednesday morning at Harassments Bar and Grill, located at 900 N. Market St.
“This is our 12th year that we have put on this Thanksgiving food drive,” said Dawn Ondo, manager of the bar and grill.
“Thanks to our many sponsors and the Manna Food Project, from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church (Jefferson), this is our biggest one yet,” Ondo said.
Harassments Bar and Grill, in conjunction with the Manna Food Project, put together the needed ingredients to make many area families happy.
“Manna Food Project supplies us with the names, and we, along with our many sponsors, who are local businesses, organizations and individuals, raise the money and necessary food donations to supply families with what they need for a Thanksgiving dinner,” Ondo said.
Ondo, Harassments owner Terry Schley and their helpers put together the boxes, which will feed family groups numbering from one person to families of 10.
“We raised $1,300 this year, but because of the economy and grocery price increases, we had to cut pies from the list,” Ondo said. “But we make sure there are plenty of the essentials in the box to feed the families not only for Thanksgiving, but things they can use for awhile.”
Helping Ondo hand out the boxes was her daughter Brittany Stacy, 16, of Pierpont, who said this is something she likes to do because everyone should have a nice Thanksgiving dinner.
“I think it is sad that with the economy, so many families can’t afford a Thanksgiving dinner,” Stacy said.
Even though it makes for a hectic holiday for Ondo, she says the look on the family members’ faces is worth it.
“This is a very rewarding event. We hope more businesses will want to get involved for next year,” she said.
Harassments will be open today for those who would like company among friends, Ondo said.
