KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — An accident on Interstate 90 Sunday afternoon claimed the life of a 72-year-old woman.
The woman was eastbound on I-90, just west of the bridge over Conneaut Creek, when she lost control of her vehicle. She traveled off the left side of the road, came back on the road, lost control again and struck the guardrail, said Kingsville Fire Chief Chip Laugen.
The accident happened about 1 p.m. and had both lanes of I-90 shut down for several hours.
“We extricated her and got her loaded into the squad,” Laugen said. “By that time MedEvac was there.”
Laugen said the westbound lanes of the freeway were closed to allow MedEvac medical helicopter to land. The woman was flown to Hamot Medical Center in Erie where she died.
“It was pretty confusing out there,” he said. “There were a lot of bystanders and everyone wanted to help.”
Conneaut Fire Department responded as mutual aid and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the crash. The highway was not re-opened until about 5:30 p.m., according to OHP.
OHP would not release the victim’s name or residence. The patrol first promised a news release on the crash Sunday night, but then said no information would be released until today. It offered no explanation for the change.
