Ashtabula County commissioners award bids for Williamsfield Community center project

JEFFERSON — More than $49,000 in contracts for playground equipment and surface materials at the Williamsfield Community Center were awarded Thursday by Ashtabula County commissioners.

On hand to hear the good news were two members of the community’s Play Safe Project committee, Marty Conner and Doreen Kocvinsky.

A $23,466 contract was approved from David Williams & Associates of Alliance for a composite play structure for children, 5-12 years old. The eight-swing structure contract for $3,868 went to Anderson Recreational Design of Medina. Snider & Associates of North Royalton will supply 3,200 cubic yards of rubber playground mulch for $21,900 to replace existing materials.

The project was funded with a $40,000 Community Development Block Grant Formula program in 2007. Williamsfield Township trustees secured a $14,900 state Natureworks grant and the community center support group held numerous fundraisers, according to Conner.

In addition the group is getting a $25,000 grant from the Ashtabula Foundation for a second phase of the project. Conner said the Play Safe Project volunteers will begin setting up the equipment May 3 and complete it by mid-May.

Conner said the center and its outdoor complex is used by all ages. The project committee worked with the county’s Department of Community Services program manager, Janice Switzer to get the CDBG grant.
