Criminal arraignment held for 20 defendants


JEFFERSON —Twenty people were arraigned Friday and entered pleas to felony charges before Common Pleas Court Judge Alfred Mackey.

The state was represented by assistant county prosecutors Harold E. Specht, Jr., Margaret A. Draper and Susan R. Thomas.

The following cases were assigned to Judge Gary L. Yost:

n Rodney L. Williams, 28, of 1975 Chapman Ave., Madison, pleaded not guilty to a charge of one count of possession of controlled substance. The court appointed public defender Richard R. Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously posted $2,500 personal recognizance bond was continued; and

n Billy O. Martin Jr., 21, of 5680 Anderson Road, Pierpont Township, pleaded not guilty to one count of burglary and 15 counts of theft. The court appointed public defender Joseph A. Humpolick as defense counsel. A $50,000 cash or commercial surety bond was set for Martin. He is being held in county jail for a probation violation.

The following cases were assigned to Judge Ronald Vettel:

n Arthur Cook, 54, of 509 W. 36th St., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to a charge of trafficking in drugs. The court appointed attorney Hobart Shiflet as defense counsel. A previously posted $7,500 personal recognizance bond was continued;

n Arii A. Payne, 24, of 5207 Adams Ave., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to charges of vehicular assault and felonious assault. He was represented by attorney David Per Due. The judge set a bond of $10,000 cash or surety and upon posting, the defendant may be released from county jail. Other conditions set by the court include that the defendant must reside with his uncle in Ashtabula and not have contact with the alleged victim;

n Christopher H. Eaton, 20, of 345 Jefferson St., Conneaut, pleaded not guilty to a charge of felonious assault. The court appointed public defender Dean Topalof as defense counsel. A previously posted $15,000 personal recognizance bond was continued. The defendant was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim;

n Jeffrey A. Taylor, 24, of Madison Correctional Institution, 1851 Route 56, London, Ohio, pleaded not guilty to two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The court appointed Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously set bond of $5,000 is continued with the condition Taylor have no contact with the alleged victim. He is currently in prison on other charges;

n Clinton L. Pratt, 26, of 426 Station Ave., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to two counts of drug trafficking. The court appointed Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously posted $10,000 personal recognizance bond was continued;

n Joe Bill Baier, 46, of 5400 Mechanicsville Road, Orwell, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of drugs. He was represented by attorney Dennis DiMartino. A previously posted $10,000 cash or surety bond was continued;

n Terry R. Fowler, 28, of 3081 Pinney Topper Road., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic violence and assault on a police officer. The court appointed Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously posted $15,000 personal recognizance bond was continued with the condition that Fowler have no contact with the alleged victim; and

n Joseph Ebelender Jr., 25, of 4483 Rome-Rock Creek Road, Rome Township, pleaded not guilty to a the charge of grand theft of a motor vehicle. The court appointed Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously posted $5,000 personal recognizance bond is continued.

The following cases were assigned to Judge Alfred W. Mackey:

n Lewis Gable, 39, of 187 Hiler St., Conneaut, pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of cocaine and drug trafficking. The court appointed Humpolick as defense counsel. A previously posted $5,000 personal recognizance bond was continued;

n Daryl R. Patterson, 28, of 618 W. 46th St., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft. The court appointed Topalof as defense counsel. A $5,000 personal recognizance bond was set. Patterson currently is serving a sentence from Ashtabula Municipal Court and is to be released Tuesday. Upon his release and posting this new bond, Patterson may be released from county jail;

n Decarlo Sanders, 18, of 22 Batchel Ave., Akron, pleaded not guilty to two counts of illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility. The court appointed Topalof as defense counsel. A previously posted $10,000 personal recognizance bond is continued;

n Tiffany N. Nurse, 23, of 738 Frederick Blvd., Akron, pleaded not guilty to two counts of complicity to illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility. The court appointed public defender Dennis M. Reid as defense counsel. A previously posted $10,000 personal recognizance bond is continued;

n Tonya A. Clausen, 36, of 202 W. Main Road, Conneaut, pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of cocaine and drug trafficking. The defendant was represented by attorney William P. Bobulsky. A previously posted $15,000 cash or commercial surety bond was continued;

n Mark D. Robbins, 47, of 118 Riverside Drive, Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to a charge of failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer. The court appointed public defender Marie Lane as defense counsel. A previously posted $10,000 cash or commercial surety bond is continued;

n Latarris Sanders, 30, c/o Lake Erie Correctional Institution, 501 Thompson Road, Conneaut, pleaded not guilty to four counts of complicity to illegal conveyance of weapons or prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility. The court appointed attorney Thomas J. Simon was defense counsel. No bond was set by the judge as Sanders is currently serving a prison term in Lake Erie Correctional Institution with a release date of January 2012;

n Jasen A. Beutler, 22, of 2841 Brown Road, Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to charges of failure to comply and receiving stolen property. The court appointed Danolfo as defense counsel. A previously set bond of $25,000 cash or surety was continued. Beutler is in jail on a parole violation;

n Scott D. Ketchum, 37, of 6434 Lake Road W., Ashtabula, pleaded not guilty to charges of receiving stolen property, forgery and three counts of burglary. The court appointed Topalof as defense counsel. A $25,000 personal recognizance bond was set with conditions that the defendant have no contact with alleged victims or enter two Circle K stores in Ashtabula. Upon posting the bond, Ketchum may be released from county jail; and

n Brian R. Potter, 41, of 631 Madison St., Conneaut, pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of cocaine and drug trafficking. He was represented by attorney Malcolm S. Douglas. A previously posted $5,000 bond with the 10 percent deposit rule, was continued.
