JEFFERSON — A dozen workers were on hand Monday morning as the Ashtabula County Board of Elections began double-checking the results of the Nov. 6 general election.
Results will be officially certified by the election board at a special 10 a.m. meeting on Nov. 28, said Richard Hornstein, board director.
In five races, results must be re-examined by hand because tabulators were not programmed to accept multiple ballots on Election Day. Those races include Conneaut Board of Education and council contests in North Kingsville, Geneva-on-the-Lake, Jefferson and Roaming Shores. The council races were counted by hand after polls closed, the school board race one day later.
The recount also will include about 400 provisional ballots and votes received from county residents overseas, primarily military personnel. There’s a chance the ballot recount could alter the outcome of some ultra-tight contests or qualify some races for free recounts, officials have said.
A tax issue in Rock Creek was deadlocked on Election Day, while another was defeated by just seven votes. A handful of candidate races were separated by just a few votes.
