SHTABULA - - A taxi almost ran over Jane Haines when her high heels caught in a sewer grate.
As Suzanne Kist walked past a skyscraper, a bag of garbage came out of nowhere and splattered all over her head.
The girls teased Sarah Toivola after someone mistook her for actress Christina Applegate.
But all and all, these three stylists from Ultimate Appearance, 4702 Main Ave., had a marvelous time last weekend at a hair-dressing class in New York City.
"This year's look is a very polished finish," said Haines, owner of Ultimate Appearance. "Styles are becoming more dressed - - from ruffled or messy to a finished look."
The women attended the Graham Webb International Academy at Wella Studio in Rockefeller Plaza. The name of two-day class was "The Architecture of Hair" and, at the end of the class, Kist won the title of "Best Stylist."
"That was really great," Toivola said.
Kist said she felt honored to win.
The teacher, Francesca Rivetti, is originally from London, and her work has been featured in national and international trade publications, showcasing her eclectic talent ranging from classic to contemporary hairdressing.
Rivetti allowed the stylists to work on doing "up-dos" with really long hair and really short hair (with the help of forms and extensions), Haines said.
They used foils to create spiral, Z and accordion shapes in the hair.
Carmel highlights, as well as putting beads, ribbon, pipe cleaners, buttons and feathers in the hair is in style this year, Haines said.
She added that they practiced using hot curlers and hot sticks again.
"We had to dig them out of the dungeon," she said.
When they weren't in class, the women stayed at the Crown Plaza Hotel and went to see "Hair Spray" on Broadway.
"The main girl in the show had Susie's hair style," Toivola said.
Kist said, "Just like it! That's a sign the 60s have come back."
Haines said her stylists regularly attend hair shows to keep up on the latest styles, which will come in handy for teens who want a new do for the homecoming dance.
