ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP - - A 58-year-old township man and his three-year-old grandson are lucky to be alive after getting clipped by fast moving train Wednesday morning near Dickenson Road.
Robert Chernock of 3408 Dickenson Road was driving his ATV with his grandson along the Norfolk-Southern railroad tracks at the dead-end section of Dickenson Road. Sheriffs deputies said Chernock was apparently riding on a dirt path by the tracks when he was "bumped" off the ATV by the eastbound train.
Both the driver and his grandson were transported to Ashtabula County Medical Center, said sheriffs spokesman, Lt. Greg Leonhard. He did not believe their injuries were serious.
No information on Chernock or his young grandson was available from ACMC officials.
Leonhard said Chernock told deputies of putting the ATV in reverse and trying to maneuver off the railroad tracks as the train was coming. Chernock was cited for criminal trespassing and child endangering.
Deputies served Chernock at the hospital with a summons to appear in Ashtabula Municipal Court before Judge Albert Camplese on the two charges, Leonhard said.
