AUSTINBURG TOWNSHIP — A tractor-trailer truck driver was robbed late Wednesday in the parking lot at the Flying J truck stop on Route 45 in Austinburg Township, according to Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department deputies.
The driver, 34, from Ontario, Canada, was not harmed, deputies said. No weapon was brandished or displayed by the robber, deputies said.
The incident occurred in the rear parking lot of the business, and was reported shortly after 11 p.m., deputies said. The truck driver had exited his truck and was walking between other big rigs to the restaurant when he was accosted by a man, deputies said. The man demanded the driver’s wallet, according to reports. The driver tried to comply, but his wallet became wedged in a coat pocket, he told deputies. The driver then took off his coat, gave it to the robber and then ran back to his truck, deputies said.
The robber ran off in a different direction, deputies said. The wallet contained credit cards but no cash, deputies said.
Deputies are looking for a tall, slender black male wearing dark clothing. The robber appeared to be in his mid-30s, the victim told deputies.
