CONCORD TOWNSHIP —
Alcohol has been determined to have been a factor in a fatal one-vehicle crash that occurred early Monday on Interstate 90, according to the Chardon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
A 1993 Cadillac DeVille was eastbound on I-90 in southern lane when, at about 1:18 a.m., it drove through an opening between the concrete barriers marked by orange construction barrels with reflective material.
The barriers and barrels are set in place because of a lane closure for the roadway being replaced and work on the bridge. +
Once on the closed portion of the road, the Cadillac continued eastbound until the roadway ended driving off onto the unfinished portion striking the edge of the newly poured concrete.
The Cadillac was driven by Robert M. Courie, 57, of Thompson. He was transported to Tri-Point Medical Center by Concord Township EMS. He was later transported from Tri-Point to Cleveland Metro Hospital where he died from his injuries later that night. Courie was wearing his seatbelt.
A passenger, Maraya L. Schwenner, 32, of Mentor. was transported to Cleveland Metro Hospital where she was treated and released.
She did not have her seatbelt on.
The crash remains under investigation by OHP.
