JEFFERSON —
Commissioner Daniel Claypool on Tuesday directed County Administrator Janet Discher to ask all county departments to put the brakes on gasoline usage.
Discher told Claypool and Board President Peggy Carlo in a work session that the board will need to allocate more funds to the gasoline line item in the general budget. She said 94 percent of the money allocated for 2012 gasoline purchases has been spent. Discher estimates that an additional allocation of up to $50,000 will be required to get the county through the fourth quarter. Only $21,000 remains in the account and the county spends close to $30,000 monthly on gasoline.
Departments outside the general fund reimburse the county for their gasoline usage. General fund departments don’t, and the list includes the sheriff’s department.
“It’s the sheriff’s department that uses most of the gasoline,” Discher said.
From the dog warden to the probation department, usage is up across the departments.
“Nobody is abusing it,” Discher said. “It’s just that there is a lot of business going on.”
Claypool told Discher to send an email encouraging conservation of fuel whenever possible.
In other action Tuesday, the board approved one-month extensions to 15 contracts with the Ashtabula County Department of Job and Family Services (ACDJFS). The extensions, which will take the contracts through October, were necessary because of a delay in funding.
The board also received and laid on the table for review proposals for telephone services for the ACDJFS. Windstream Communications and Conneaut Telephone presented proposals.
