Layoffs won’t hinder murder probe

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Recent layoffs in the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department won’t affect the agency’s investigation into the Christmas Day stabbing death of an Ashtabula Township man, Sheriff William Johnson said Thursday.

The bulk of the investigation into the murder of William F. Post, 42, was completed before Johnson was obliged to lay off 27 employees, including 16 road deputies, earlier this week, he said. “(Detectives) have most of the work done,” Johnson said.

If follow-up work, like additional interviews, is needed, deputies still on the job will handle the assignment, the sheriff said.

Johnson said he understood deputies directly involved in the Post case who were laid off took their files with them and still are continuing their work.

“The guys on that case are dedicated,” Johnson said.

Post was found inside his Dickinson Road home on Dec. 25 by his father, according to reports. He had been stabbed repeatedly, according to information from the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office.

Last month, Johnson said a “person of interest” had surfaced in the case. The Ashtabula man was being held in the county jail on charges unrelated to Post’s death, the sheriff said at the time.

Johnson said investigators still are awaiting a report on forensic evidence collected at the scene. Detectives are confident the man in custody is the culprit, the sheriff said last month. It’s believed Post was acquainted with the man in custody, according to the sheriff.

While the layoffs won’t crimp the Post investigation, other cases may be delayed because of the staffing shortage, Johnson has said.

“We will do whatever is necessary,” he said.
