Pizza, nachos, hot wings and beer surely will fill in the commentary Sunday as the Indianapolis Colts go head to head with the New Orleans Saints.
Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Harmon said OHP is offering tips to reduce the number of drunk drivers on the road after the big game. OHP has joined forces with the National Highway Safety and Traffic Association to limit drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday with the Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk campaign.
“We are encouraging motorists to plan ahead, designate a sober driver or to call a taxi to get home safely,” Harmon said. “Remember, you can be held liable and prosecuted if someone you served ends up in an impaired-driving crash.”
Harmon said there are ways to enjoy the game and get home safe.
If you are attending a Super Bowl party or
watching at a sports bar or restaurant:
n Designate your sober driver before the party begins and leave your car keys at home;
n Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself: Eat enough food, take breaks and alternate with nonalcoholic drinks;
n If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home, or call a cab, friend or family member to come and get you;
n Never let friends get behind the wheel of their vehicles if you think they are about to drive while impaired; and
n Always buckle up. It’s still your best defense against impaired drivers.
If you are
hosting a Super Bowl party:
n Make sure all of your guests designate their sober drivers in advance or help arrange ride-sharing with other sober drivers;
n Serve lots of food and include lots of nonalcoholic beverages at the party;
n Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter of the game and begin serving coffee and dessert; and
n Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving while impaired.
