Ashtabula fire department responds to three fires

ASHTABULA — Three fires kept firefighters busy late Saturday afternoon, and early evening.

The first fire was called in to dispatchers at 5:19 p.m. and involved a report of smoke at the old Bow Socket building on Ann Avenue, said Lt. Stephen Chase of the Ashtabula Fire Department.

“After an extensive search of the area a small fire was located on the second floor,” Chase said.

“Due to the nature of the old building and the limited access, personnel used multiple fire extinguishers to accomplish the initial attempt to put the fire out. A hoseline was then pulled through a second floor window via a ladder to further saturate the area,” he said.

A small camp and brush fire were then reported near the building and an engine drove up the railroad right of way and firefighters used 750 gallons of water to wet down the area and make sure the fire was out, Chase said.

The fire department was made aware of a third fire at 6:25 p.m. that involved a garbage can on fire inside 626 Lake Avenue, Chase said.

Firefighters went into the home through a back door and found the garbage can was completely consumed by fire and the fire was beginning to extend up the wall, Chase said.

He said a handline was used to extinguish the fire and moderate damage occurred in the area and there was light smoke damage throughout the house.

Chase said no injuries were reported at any of the fires.
