Tired of tires? Bula gets grant

ASHTABULA — The city has been awarded a $10,000 grant to help residents and the city dispose of scrap tires.

The Tire Amnesty Grant Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, helps local governments develop programs to promote scrap tire collection drives, sponsor tire drop-off efforts and engage in clean up events, City Manager James Timonere said.

The first step will be asking city residents to bring up to four passenger tires to the transfer station, 501 W. 24th St., allowing them to dispose of them for free from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 15.

“Ohio is aggressively addressing its backlog of scrap tires, which if left unchecked, could lead to health and environmental concerns statewide,” the ODNR web site states.

Mary Church, project administrator in the city’s newly formed Department of Planning and Community Development, wrote the grant and secured the funding for the city’s Sanitation Department, Timonere said.

“It’s something she worked hard on,” he said.

When residents bring their tires to the transfer station on Sept. 15, they must provide proof of residency with an ID or utility bill bearing their address. Additional tires can be disposed of at $3 per tire without a rim and $5 per tire with a rim.
