Ashtabula County sheriff looking for man who approached 9-year-old girl

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — Area law enforcement agencies are on the lookout for a man who approached a 9-year-old girl asking for help to find his dog on Wednesday evening, said Ashtabula County Sheriff William Johnson.

Johnson said the man approached the girl on Dickenson Road with the request, but did not attempt to touch her or ask her to get into his vehicle.

“(He) asked if she could help him find his dog Cocoa,” Johnson said. He said the girl went inside to get a relative and when they came back out the man was gone.

Johnson said the incident occurred around 6:20 Wednesday evening and involved a man who was described as white with a mustache, driving a dark blue or black Durango.

“All departments have been notified,” Johnson said of the response to the incident.

“I think the 9-year-old girl did the right thing,” Johnson said.

“What we are looking for (is) a man who fits the description of the person and then maybe we can take them back and see if it is the person,” he said.

Johnson said there may have been a similar incident in Ashtabula. Ashtabula Police Chief Rob Stell did not respond to a phone call regarding the incident.
